New Surface Devices: Microsoft Drops the Copilot+ Brand
In the week of September 25, 2026, Microsoft announced new Surface devices, specifically the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch models. Neither of them carries the Copilot+ PC designation anymore. According to windowscentral.com and subvolts.com, this marks the end of the Copilot+ brand.
Both devices fall into the category that Microsoft refers to as entry premium. According to windowscentral.com, their prices start at over $1,000.
New Surface Devices Meet Requirements, but the Name Changes
According to Brett Ostrum, Vice President of the Surface division, it is not a matter of the devices failing to meet the requirements. "These devices are not called Copilot+ PCs. They meet all the requirements that we previously established for Copilot+ devices," Ostrum said, as reported by boingboing.net.
AI Features Head Directly into Windows
The website subvolts.com reports that Microsoft wants to integrate artificial intelligence features directly into Windows and the new devices, rather than tying them to one specific brand. In the same week, the company announced a major overhaul of the Copilot platform. According to windowscentral.com, CEO Satya Nadella described it with the words: "It is a new operating system."
According to windowscentral.com, the Copilot+ brand faced troubles from the very beginning. Customers did not distinguish between a Copilot+ PC and a regular AI PC, and the situation was not helped by the Recall feature either. The website also points out that Microsoft uses the Copilot name across dozens of products, which does not help clarity.
However, according to windowscentral.com, the end of the Copilot+ PC designation does not mean the end of Copilot as such. The Premium Copilot platform has 30 million subscribers.
